Cytotec (Misoprostol) is used to prevent stomach ulcers while you take NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen).
Cytotec is a brand name for the generic medication misoprostol. It is prescribed to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers in patients who take NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, since those drugs can inflame the stomach lining. Cytotec belongs to a class of medications known as prostaglandins, which means that it works by reducing the amount of acid that the stomach releases, and that it protects the stomach lining, which is where stomach ulcers occur.
Aspirin and other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, piroxicam, and others, which are widely used to control the pain and inflammation of arthritis, are generally hard on the stomach. If you must take an NSAID for a prolonged period of time, and if you are elderly or have ever had a stomach ulcer, your doctor may want you to take Cytotec for as long as you take the NSAID.
